The famous Rainbow Reef lies between the south coast of Savusavu and the southern point of Taveuni offering spectacular diving opportunities. Jean-Michel Cousteau recognised the diving opportunities here in 1990 when he chose Savasuva as his base for his Project Ocean Search. Savusavu Township itself is small and picturesque. Its population of 5,000 is split evenly between Indo-Fijians and indigenous Fijians. Savusavu is also home to a number of ex-pat Americans who have bought property here.
